Founded as a joint venture by companies including Overdrive, Tarte, Nexton, and Circus, it operates under the Japanese-based company Japan Animation Contents.

Initially, MangaGamer’s catalog featured titles from its founding companies, such as “Shuffle!” by Navel. Early translations faced criticism for quality, leading to re-translations like that of “Edelweiss.” Subsequent projects employed native English-speaking translators, enhancing the localization quality.

Beyond games, MangaGamer expanded into distributing erotic manga and anime, partnering with publishers like Akane Shinsha and Discovery. They also collaborated with fan translation groups to officially release titles such as “Kara no Shōjo” by Innocent Grey and “Ef: A Fairy Tale of the Two.” by Minori.
